Challenge Europe 2009
During his meeting on December 2008, CD-FMJD decided about places in World Championship
2009. Twenty (20) places were given to Europe.
Distribution of these 20 places:

1. (10) Direct places for the federations: Belarus, Estonia, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania,
Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Ukraine
2. (4) Direct place for top 4 players in last European Championship: G.Valneris (Latvia),
E.Bouzynski (Lithuania), V.Virny (Germany), E.Vatoutin (Belarus)
3. (6) Places from qualification tournament — “Challenge Europe”
One important general remark about WC — maximum 2 players per country not counting the two
players for the match Schwarzman and Georgiev, not counting sponsor place and organization place
and not counting wild card FMJD.
So the following countries already fulfil his 2 places limit and con not participate in the “Challenger”:
Belarus, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Competition rules:
1. Tournament will take place in Berlin (Germany) from 1st till 7th of March 2009.
Arriving: February 28th, opening March 1st morning, closing March 7th afternoon.

2. The tournament is only for players from European Federations which has NO DEBTS in
FMJD/EDC.

3. Participants: maximum 3 players from the following federations: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belgium,
Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Moldavia,
Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Ukraine.
Additional player from Germany in case of odd number of players

4. Applications (ONLY FROM FEDERATIONS) should be sent to EDC till 15th of February 2009.
In any special cases federations should contact EDC to make an individual agreement.

5. Tournament should be played in 9 round Swiss system. In case of larger/smaller number of
participants, main referee, in consultation with EDC, will have ability to increase number of
rounds, but in any case amount of rounds won’t be more than 3 rounds in two successive
days.

6. Final places according to FMJD rules applying to Swiss system tournaments. Barrages should
not be played. Only in case of problem to select promotional places (same Swiss results) a
barrage game(s) will be played (5’+3”). Details will be announced by main referee after
consultation with EDC, before barrage.

7. PROMOTION to World Championship: best 6 players but:
a. maximum 2 players from: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia,
Hungary, Israel, Moldavia, Slovenia, Switzerland,
b. maximum 1 player from: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Ukraine

8. FEE – 40 euro

9. Hospitality (playing hall close to this place, 10 minutes walk):
Hotel „Pro Social“ Blumberger Damm 12/14, 12683 Berlin (www.pro-social.de).
Costs (hotel + 3 times meals):
Single room — 30 euro per person per day
double room — 25 euro per person per day
4 persons room — 22 euro per person per day
